SmartShape Design Hosts IP Perspectives Event Covering Patent, Trademark and Copyright Best Practices

Last night, SmartShape hosted an esteemed panel discussion covering critical IP best practices and principles.

SmartShape Design CEO Mike Maczuzak shared the designer’s perspective on IP, including common questions and challenges that come up around patents, agreements copyrights, and trademarks during the product development process.

Tarolli, Sundheim, Covell & Tummino LLP Attorney Eileen Mathews shared information for innovators and startups about the patent process as well as basic agreements for protecting ideas and inventions, including types of patents, patent filing strategies, the patent prosecution process and basic information regarding NDA and license agreements. 

Tarolli, Sundheim, Covell & Tummino LLP Attorney Rita Kline shared trademark and copyright 101, including various forms of protection available for branding and creative work, what might not need protected, and the best time to file. She also touched briefly on the impact digital design is having in the trademark and copyright space.

Nimble Consulting Services Founder Jeff Barlow shared what you need to know before your next meeting with in-house legal counsel, including lessons learned from his time leading global legal teams at Eaton and Swagelok

Each panelist shared a 10-minute presentation to a room of close to 50 attendees, followed by an open audience Q&A with all panelists. The entire event was moderated by SmartShape Design Marketing Manager Rachel Kresge.
